When vCloud Express was announced along with the vCloud API at VMworld 2009 in September I decided to sign up and try building VMware virtual machines (VMs) in the Cloud for myself. Being able to provision infrastructure as a service (Iaas) virtually with only a credit card has a certain useful appeal to me, and I wanted to see firsthand exactly what can be done and how much it costs.

This post summarizes my experience and touches on Terremark’s various options for building VMware Cloud VMs. I also quickly describe/illustrate the difference in charges for Linux versus Windows Cloud servers. This post contains a lot of screen shots, and at the end I’ll offer some opinions on the usefulness of vCloud Express and where this service might make sense for IT shops.

Getting started

Creating an account is simple. Just go to http://vcloudexpress.terremark.com/ and register for an account.

Walk through the Sign Up screens and wait for the email with instructions to continue.

Creating an account involves entering your billing address and credit card information.

The web administration interface

When you are all set up and the account is verified you are ready to log in. The web interface pictured next is my account activity after almost 2 months of usage. A new account will have zero resource usage on the Resources tab.

The Servers tab is where you build new VMs and manage existing ones. Options to power cycle servers, manage ip addresses, and connect to the Console of the server are available from here.

Creating an account allowed me 62 ip addresses to use by default and a single external ip address.

On the Network tab you can manage and assign internal and external ip address, create firewall rules, and purchases services like http/https access from the Internet.

I never explored purchasing additional internal and external ip addresses, but I imagine that would be possible as needed.

Building Linux and Windows VMs

As mentioned earlier, the Server tab is where you build new servers. You do so in an a-la-carte, pay for what you need style.

You start by choosing on the operating system (OS), number of CPUs and amount of RAM.

Obviously there is more cost associated with a licensed Windows OS versus an open source Linux OS.

Price per hour for number of VPUs, amount of RAM, and size of system disk selected from a list of exhaustive choices.

Complete the server information window in order to deploy the VM.

You can copy (clone) existing servers as well.
The copy wizard asks you for a new server name, ip address, and then the other information needed for the new server to be unique

Accessing your Cloud servers

vCloud Express provides administrative access to your environment via a Cisco SSL VPN connection. Terremark officially supports Internet Explorer initiated connections only, but instructions can be found to use Firefox in the community forums.

Once the SSL VPN connection is established there is a web based Remote Console client available from the vCloud Express Servers tab, but more reliable connections were established for me using standard administrative tools such as putty, VNC, and remote desktop.

Internet availability

Just like building servers is pay as you go, establishing http/https connections to the assigned public ip address must be enabled for a fee. There is a separate charge for each server and protocol configured.

I was able to install Apache from the console of my Ubuntu 9.04 server and configure http access from the Internet.

September 2009 Charges

Although I really did not do very much with my cloud VMs, I did leave the Ubuntu server with Apache up and running at all times just to get an idea of minimum charges. From this over simplified and idle environment I would recommend others expect a minimum monthly charge of at least $30 per month for Linux and $65 per month for Windows per server.

General Thoughts and Observations about Terremark vCloud Express

Terremark is one of many hosting providers offering vCloud Express. I did not compare provider pricing or features when I decided to sign up for Terremark’s service. They were featured at VMworld and therefore got my business. I have not researched the other providers since then either. I suggest anyone interested in working with Cloud servers for any extended period of time put in due diligence in selecting a provider. Comparisons between vCloud Express and other Cloud solutions should also be investigated.

Personally, I was a little disappointed in the overall dependence on an administrator working from a Windows desktop while using Internet Explorer as a web browser. I’ll even go as far as saying my most consistent and a productive experience with the vCloud Express web interface was from a Windows XP session. I had various setbacks from both Vista and Windows 7. Although Firefox can be configured to work if Java VM is installed, the IE Active X plug in seems to be the focus of the development so far.

I did not see OVF import/export capability from Terremark’s vCloud Express. I realize this is a first generation offering, but from what I understand about the Cloud vision the vApp in OVF standard will be the basis for moving between the private data center and the hosted Cloud. I expected the basic ability to manually upload VMs to my vCloud Express environment and/or the option to download Cloud created VMs when desired. To the best of my knowledge this does not exist yet with Terremark.

vCloud Express generally speaking seems to be a great option for Test/Dev applications and servers that can operate independently from the rest of the infrastructure. That is, if the multi tiered application doesn’t need your DNS or Active Directory and can stand on it’s own. It also seems like a cost effective choice for the short term project. For example, the operational expense of paying $300 a month for 3 Cloud servers instead of the purchase or lease of three physical servers that will only be used for a 3 to 6 month project. IT shops also do not have to “rack and stack” Cloud VMs or procure their own licensing thus reducing the total cost even further.

A public a release candidate of VMware Player 3.0 is now available to the public. The free Player finally has the ability to create new virtual machines (VMs), thus making it a viable alternative to other free, host based hypervisors such as VirtualBox and Microsoft’s Virtual PC. Not packing quite as many features as the licensed VMware Workstation, Player version 3.0 still offers a good enough platform for basic desktop testing and development.

More information and a download link is available at VMware Communities: VMware Player Release Candidate.

The Feature Highlights listed on the VMware Player 3.0 RC Page:

The ability to create Virtual Machines

Aero support for Windows 7 and Windows Vista guests!!!

OpenGL support for Windows guests (give Google Earth a try!)

New User Interface including a Virtual Machine Library

Windows 7 support (as a Host and Guest OS)

Automatically download and install the latest VMware Tools package

Multiple Monitor Support

Print from your VM without installing printer drivers. Virtual Printing courtesy of our friends at ThinPrint.

ALSA Sound support on Linux hosts enables multiple VMs to play “music” concurrently

VIX API support will let our coding fans write applications that can interact with their VMs

I have not had the opportunity to try the new Player yet, but I plan on downloading it soon and will probably post some screen shots when I get it installed.

We made a huge number of performance improvements in vSphere 4.0. The ESX storage stack was no exception. We ran a wide variety of micro and real world benchmarks to thoroughly evaluate and optimize vSphere’s storage subsystem. It is now even more efficient for the enterprise and ready to support the cloud.

A wide variety of I/O intensive applications will run efficiently on vSphere with all the improvements. You can find details on the architectural changes and storage performance improvements made in this white paper.

Some of the noteworthy improvements are:

· VMware Paravirtualized SCSI (PVSCSI driver): vSphere ships with this new high performance virtual storage adapter. Bus logic and LSI logic were the only choices so far. PVSCSI is best suited to run highly I/O intensive applications in the guest more efficiently (reduced CPU cycles) and with increased throughput. This is possible with a series of optimizations explained in the paper.

· iSCSI support improvements: We made significant improvements in the iSCSI stack for both software and hardware iSCSI. The improvements are not just in terms of performance but features as well. Noteworthy among these is CPU efficiency improvements that range from 7-52% depending on the type and size of I/O.

· Software iSCSI and NFS support with Jumbo Frames: vSphere adds jumbo frames and 10Gbit NIC networking support for both NFS and iSCSI. This helps drive bandwidth that is many times faster than previous ESX releases.

· File system improvements for enhanced Virtual Desktop experience and scalable cloud solutions: We made several optimizations in VMware File System (VMFS) with a special focus on enterprise desktop and cloud solutions. File system along with other improvements in different parts of ESX improves performance of several provisioning operations dramatically. An example is “boot storm” performance (where several hundreds of virtual machines are booted simultaneously in a virtual desktop environment). With these improvements time taken to boot a large number of virtual machines simultaneously is many times faster compared to ESX3.5.

ESX supports several different storage protocols like Fibre Channel, iSCSI and NFS. We published a white paper that compares I/O performance using each of these protocols. Results show that line rate can be achieved with each of the storage protocols for single or multiple virtual machines. The paper also highlights CPU efficiency improvements in vSphere compared to the previous release. This means that more virtual machines can now run on the same hardware. Graph below shows one example (sequential read, 64KB block size) of the relative CPU cost for each of the storage protocols. Results on ESX 4.0 are shown next to ESX 3.5 to highlight efficiency improvements on all protocols.

Hardware configuration and detailed results can be found in this protocol comparison white paper.

Windows Virtual PC (WVPC) is a client virtualization software, which can be used on Windows 7 to create multiple Virtual Machines (VMs), each running a different operating system (OS). WVPC can be obtained as a free download from Windows Virtual PC website. WVPC is the engine which supports Windows XP Mode, a pre-configured VM running Windows XP SP3 provided by Microsoft on Windows Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise SKUs.

You can read more about Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode in my “Installing Virtual PC on Windows 7” and “How To Install Windows XP Mode (XPM) on Windows 7” articles.

Windows Virtual PC: Download:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

Note that Windows Virtual PC only supports Windows 7 as the host platform, and in order to successfully use it you must have a computer that uses a virtualization-enabled technology by Intel (Intel VT) or AMD (AMD V).

Windows Virtual PC: Configure BIOS:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/support/configure-bios.aspx

Windows XP Mode is specially designed for small and medium-sized businesses to help ease the migration process to Windows 7 by providing additional compatibility for their older productivity applications.

As always, make sure to read the Release Notes and the Installation Guide before installing.

Note: You need to uninstall the Beta before installing the RC product binaries, upgrades aren’t supported.

Based on feedback they’ve received from the Windows XP Mode beta users, Microsoft has made several improvements to the usability of Windows XP Mode for small and medium-sized business users:

You can now attach USB devices to Windows XP Mode applications directly from the Windows 7 task-bar. This means your USB devices, such as printers and flash drives, are available to applications running in Windows XP Mode, without the need to go into full screen mode.

You can now access Windows XP Mode applications with a “jump-list”. Right click on the Windows XP Mode applications from the Windows 7 task bar to select and open most recently used files.

You now have the flexibility of customizing where Windows XP Mode differencing disk files are stored.

You can now disable drive sharing between Windows XP Mode and Windows 7 if you do not need that feature.

The initial setup now includes a new user tutorial about how to use Windows XP Mode.

As an administrator who primarily supports users and computers in distant places, I have come to appreciate anything that can make working with remote systems easier. One of the biggest timesavers in my workday is an open source application named Terminals from Microsoft’s open source project hosting site, CodePlex.

Imagine my trepidation after I installed the Windows 7 RC and began testing to see if Terminals 1.7e worked well with the new Windows or not. Would I need to run it in compatibility mode? Or even XP virtual mode?

Know What’s on Your Network with Flow-Based Traffic Analysis

SolarWinds’ Orion NetFlow Traffic Analyzer (NTA) analyzes NetFlow, J-Flow, and sFlow® data & performs CBQoS monitoring to deliver a complete picture of network traffic, identifying who & what are consuming your bandwidth.

Download a FREE TRIAL!

Fortunately, after extensive tire-kicking, Terminals 1.7e seems to behave every bit as good on Windows 7 as it did on Vista. Let me take you on a tour of its many capabilities.

Terminals 1.7e is all about storing multiple remote connections of varying types and arranging them by tags or in groups and then allowing you to mange numerous simultaneous open sessions via an interface similar to tabbed web browsers. However, you have the option of having any connection that you create open in either Terminal’s tab system or within a separate window. Here’s what the basic interface looks like (remember, you can click the images for a full-sized view):

Terminals is capable of creating connections using RDP, VNC, VMRC, Telnet, SSH1, SSH2, ICA Citrix, RAS and HTTP sessions. When manually creating a connection you are given the choice of the aforementioned protocols and, depending on the protocol that you choose, you will have a different set of options to choose from. All options should be familiar to anyone who uses that protocol frequently, e.g. toggling themes, menu animations and redirecting sound for RDP connections.

Connections can also be automatically discovered using Active Directory or by scanning a range of IP addresses for RDP, VNC, VMRC, Telnet and SSH accepting incoming connections. You can also import RDP, vRD or MuRD files.

Aside from the typical remote GUI connections to an operating system, HTTP connections can be made which essentially means that Terminals spins up Internet Explorer as a rendering engine within one of Terminal’s own tabs. This allows you to make connections to web sites or web based administration pages. Notice that picture 1 displays Terminal’s home page in the active tab.

You can keep your connections organized by tagging them. Those tags are used to create a hierarchy of folders located in a favorites fly-out window on the left of the screen. There is also a history tab in the favorites fly-out window that shows what you connected to in the last day, weeks and months.

I’m sure every administrator has a group of servers or administration pages that they log into frequently and the creators of Terminals made a grouping feature that allows you to open multiple connections at once. For example, if the first thing in the morning that you want to do is check out 4 Windows based web servers, 1 GroundWork dashboard page, 2 telnet sessions to routers and throw in some VNC connections for fun. That’s easy! Just create a group and name it whatever you’d like and then add the relevant connections that are in your favorites list. From then on, if you select that group name in the “Groups” menu all connections in that group will start up in their own tabs simultaneously.

After adding dozens or even hundreds of servers, you will want to take care that you don’t lose all of those configured connections. You can simply copy the terminals.config file in the Terminals application folder or you can backup your configuration file to Amazon’s S3 cloud storage system from within Terminals.

Another one of the useful features of Terminals is the capture manager. Capture manager gives you the ability to take a screenshot of the active remote connection and then store and manage those screenshots in a hierarchy of folders on the local machine. By clicking the “Capture Terminal Screen” button in the shortcuts menu bar, a screenshot of the currently active remote device is immediately taken . Within the capture manager tab you can arrange the photos, view them by thumbnails and annotate them.

Terminals also has the ability to connect to Flickr and upload capture manager shots to your Flickr account. I’ll bet you didn’t see that coming!

The main application window uses toolbars reminiscent of Office 2003 to organize shortcuts to many common administrative control panels and MMCs. Some of the utilities available on the toolbars include the Local Group Policy editor, device manager, certificate manager and even the power configuration control panel.

You will probably find most of those utilities to be of little use to you in the course of your workday, so you can remove the ones you don’t use and create custom shortcuts. Simply supply the executable path, optional arguments, the working folder and you’ll have your very own shortcut.

If you need more space to view your remote connections, just press F11 for full screen mode. Terminals will remove its menu and toolbars and cover up everything on the screen (including the taskbar) to give you maximum space. Pressing F11 again will bring it all back.

A plethora of network related tools are available from the Networking Tools feature which you can open from the Tools menu. Networking Tools opens a separate tab with multiple sub-tabs that offer you tools like ping, trace route, WMI query, open connections, a list of network interfaces, whois lookup (yes, whois lookup from within the app), DNS lookup, scanning for shares locally or remotely, listing all running services, checking proper time from a time server and even a packet sniffer!

Many of those tools can be run to query a remote system such as the WMI Query tool, connections tab (shows open connections on a system), shares and services. Note well that terminals must be run as an administrator for many of these Networking Tools components to work properly.

For all of this consolidating and time saving coolness, I must point out some of the rough edges to this program. I don’t want anyone to have any illusions about this product. It certainly doesn’t have the polish of a commercial product or the support. It is an open source product with very few people giving their precious spare time to work on it.

Some of the minor shortcomings include:

The picture manager tab is not named. Instead it is a barely visible stub of a tab on your tabs list. In fact, if you look at the above screenshot of the Network Tools feature, you will see a stub of a tab just to the left of the Network Tools tab. Yep, that’s the picture manager tab.

Groups don’t seem to support the addition of other connections once the group has been made.

Renaming a connection really just makes a new connection with the same settings and the new name. The old connection with the old name is left behind forcing you to manually delete it.

VNC support is through the open source VNCSharp .NET VNC Client library and only versions 3.3, 3.7, and 3.8 of the RFB Protocol are supported. Some people have reported good results with VNC connections and other people have had bad experiences.

The program must be run as an administrator to be able to use most of Network Tools features such as ping and the packet sniffer. In fact, if you attempt to run the packet sniffer with a regular user account, the program will simply crash.

The new version of remote desktop included in Windows 7 causes a tiny user interface glitch in Terminals. The remote desktop banner at the top of the screen is not neatly contained within Terminal’s application window as normal, but rather superimposed over the Terminals window at the very top of the screen. Compare the two images below. Windows 7 and the UI issue with Terminals is on top and XP with the more well behaved remote dekstop UI is on the bottom

Concerning some of the more serious faults with Terminals:

The SSH and Telnet functionality has some serious limitations. Users have complained about not being able to enter brackets or the pipe character (SSH without the pipe character? Say what?). Terminals does not support the use of an external helper application for SSH so you can’t substitute the program’s built-in SSH support with something else like PuTTY.exe. Some have complained about the lack of “command recall” ability to allow you to quickly re-enter commands that you have recently used. Some other quirks exist as well such as the command prompt for the remote system being always at the top of command output rather than the output scrolling by and the prompt being at the end of the output.

There are spurious exceptions involving errors with the “DataGridView” which is usually followed by the need to completely close the program and restart. Happily, this error usually only happens when heavily using certain tabs of the Networking Tools features such as going from the connections tab to the interfaces tab. While in theory it is a nice set of features, I found that I rarely used the Networking Tools tab and concentrated mostly on RDP and HTTP connections and thus didn’t encounter DataGridView errors until I started experimenting in preparation for this article. Your mileage may vary.

With those shortcomings in mind, I invite you to try Terminals for yourself and even lend a hand in its development if you are able. The program has saved me countless hours (and some money that I didn’t have to spend on a commercial product) and made my day of remote administration much easier than it would otherwise be. And best of all… it works on Windows 7.

First and foremost those that have only been bothering about low level infrastructure virtualization details – such as VMotion compatibilities, cluster configurations, storage integrations and so forth – will have a hard time keeping up with what’s going on in the industry. Virtualization vendors are “moving up the stack” very quickly so you’d better start familiarizing with concepts and technologies around Development Frameworks, Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and stuff like that. Not the sort of things Systems Engineers (aka infrastructure people) paid too much attention to – until now.

(Okay it was on twitter but still…) Usually with my birthday coming up I take some time to look back at the past year. Coincidentally a couple of weeks ago John Troyer asked me to do a presentation at VMworld about blogging and where it can lead to. Because of my overbooked agenda (VMworld preperations, VCDX Panels and two projects) I did not have any time to prepare it but it is something that kept me busy the last week. Especially after seeing Jason Boche’s presentation at the vExpert Session at VMworld I started thinking about it again. I had some time on my hands, as I took the day off on my birthday, and decided to look back and try to convince you why voicing your opinion/views and sharing knowledge is important for your personal development and career.

Joshua Townsend – ESXTOP Batch Mode & Windows Perfmon
I needed to grab some stats from my ESX hosts for off-line analysis so I fired up my trusty ESXTOP intent on using batch mode to capture a .csv formatted output. I started to manually select the counters I was interested in while working in ESXTOP interactive mode (you can save your selected counters to the esxtop configuration file with the ‘w’ command) and thought that there must be a better way. I found that better way in the VMware Performance Community: http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-3930. There is now a -a switch that can be used to include ALL performance counters. I’m sold.

Therefore VMware remains the number one choice for the most demanding workloads. Demanding not necessarily in performance, but mainly in security, availability and flexibility.
