via MSPmentor by Joe Panettieri on 2/8/10

At first glance, VMware’s cloud strategy can be difficult for MSPs and VARs to get their arms around. And this week’s VMware Partner Exchange conference will generate a lot of noise from scores of VMware cloud partners. But what do aspiring partners really need to know? I think I can sum-up VMware’s cloud strategy in roughly four sentences…

Here they are:

First, VMware has signed up more than 1,000 members — including telecom, hosting and service providers — to back the company’s vCloud effort.

Second, VMware is promoting vSphere for infrastructure as a service (IaaS).

Third, VMware is positioning SpringSource for platform as a service (PaaS).

And forth, VMware is gearing up to position Zimbra (the recently acquired open source email system) for software as a service (SaaS) partners.

The graphic below, from VMware CTO Steve Herrod, quickly summarizes VMware’s cloud strategy:

Next Moves

Can VMware (and VMware partners) cash in on the cloud?

No doubt, plenty of MSPs are jumping on the VMware cloud bandwagon. Earlier today, BlueLock — an MSPmentor 100 company — announced BlueLock CloudSuite, which leverages the VMware vCloud technology. Meanwhile, nScaled (an MSP that promotes a Legal Cloud for attorneys), is working closely with VMware, Rackspace, FalconStor and Vyatta. For its part, FalconStor appears to be preparing a storage-centric partner program for MSPs.

The VMware Partner Exchange conference kicked off earlier today in Las Vegas. We’ll be tracking more news throughout the week.

Who Dat? Who Dat? Who Dat virtualizin’ on BladeCenter S ?

I posted last year about the NFL’s use of virtualization at the Super Bowl, and I wrote my beloved Atlanta Falcons in case they needed help when the NFL made it’s decision to standardize on IBM Blades for all 32 teams. This year, Kevin Houston, a fellow Softchoice employee and author of the increasingly popular bladesmadesimple.com blog, has posted on how the ‘09 NFC Champion New Orleans Saints have capitalized on these very technologies during the season.

Houston writes:

“Other than the obvious threat of having to relocate or evacuate due to the weather, the Saints’ constant travel required them to search for a portable IT solution that would make it easier to quickly set up operations in another city. The Saints were a long-time IBM customer, so they looked at the IBM BladeCenter S for this solution, and it worked great. (I’m going to review the BladeCenter S below, so keep reading.) The Saints consolidated 20 physical servers onto the BladeCenter S, virtualizing the environment with VMware. Although the specific configuration of their blade environment is not disclosed, IBM reports that the Saints are using 1 terabyte of built-in storage, which enables the Saints to go on the road with the essential files (scouting reports, financial apps, player stats, etc) and tools the coaches and the staff need. In fact, in the IBM Case Study video, the Assistant Director of IT for the New Orleans Saints, Jody Barbier, says, “The Blade Center S definitely can make the trip with us if we go to the Super Bowl.” I guess we’ll see. Be looking for the IBM Marketing engine to jump on this bandwagon in the next few days.”

Be sure to read Houston’s entire post for more about the many features of IBM BladeCenter S

Maybe the S model of IBM BladeCenter stood for “Saints” all along!?

The paper is titled “VMware vSphere multiprotocol performance comparison using FC, iSCSI and NFS“. I guess the title says enough and I don’t need to explain why it is important to read this one.

I read the paper twice so far. Something that stood out for me is the following graph:

I would have expected better performance from iSCSI+Jumbo Frames, and most certainly not less performance than iSCSI without Jumbo Frames. Although it is a minimal decrease it is something that you will need to be aware off. I do however feel that the decrease in CPU overhead is more than enough to justify the small decrease in performance.

Read the report, it is worth your time.

There are a lot of services these days that let you store files in “the cloud” and access them from virtually anywhere. These services are extremely handy, but what if you need a mobile operating system as well? Today we take a look at a couple of online operating systems that let you store your files and work on them as well.

Online operating systems are a good solution if you have say a Mac at home and PC at work. Or maybe certain features of Windows aren’t available on different machines you work on during the day. There are a lot of different scenarios where an online operating system could come in handy. Here we take a look at two such apps which have a lot of functionality and are free to use.

G.ho.st

This is a worthy free Web OS that gives you 15GB of storage and offers an office suite (powered by Zoho), sharing and collaboration, and access to your documents on a mobile device. The OS runs in a separate window of your browser and has a lot of neat functionality. Everything you do is saved and will be exactly the same no matter what computer you use to log into your account. The Go button acts like the Start menu on Windows and gives you access to all of the available apps and other utilities.

You can upload individual files, use the bulk uploader to transfer folders and large amounts of data, and they also offer a sync feature that will keep data on all of your machines and the G.ho.st OS synchronized. Another cool feature is getting 5GB of extra storage space for each friend or colleague you get to sing up for the service.

They offer the internal G.ho.st web browser which you could use as a security tool if you want to visit less than reputable sites without affecting your actual system.

It’s not all business either. There are some fun utilities included like a music player, it’s own email system, and links to social sites and games.

G.ho.st Lite lets you access your documents and basic features from your mobile device.

Glide OS

The next one we’ll take a look at is Glide OS which offers a free account and has 20GB of storage and up to 6 different users. It offers a lot of the same functionality of G.ho.st with their own unique interface and other features.

You can change the layout to Glide HD which allows easier navigation to the different services and features.

There are different available office features that allow you to create documents and presentations and collaborate with others as well.

Here is an example of working on a Word document inside Glide OS.

You can go through different themes and customize your desktop.

Conclusion

Other advantages of a Web OS are there is nothing to install, no Antivirus to worry with, and files and documents are available anywhere you have a web connection. Also you don’t need to worry a whole lot about a machines specs, but rather the speed of your Internet connection. There are a few other online operating systems to choose from like iCloud, and each one has different features. You might want to try each of them out to find the one that suites your needs. If you’re constantly moving from computer to computer to get work done, you may want to check out a Web OS. If nothing else, they are geeky and fun to play with.

2010 Will Require Rethinking in Data Center Technology

The industry is at a key inflection point in data center technology and in how vendors and enterprises react to these technology changes. Server virtualization kick-started nothing less than a complete rethinking of how computing workloads are provisioned, managed and moved and, in 2010, everything surrounding the CPU resources (memory, storage, networking, security services) will require rethinking, too.

At the core of this shift is the notion of provisioning workloads from ‘pools’ of resources. This started with a single CPU core being virtualized and was extended to multi-core CPUs, and then several multi-core CPUs in a cluster, where workloads can be initiated, moved and torn down from any CPU within the cluster. In the near future, this will be extended to larger clusters, an entire data center and eventually across multiple data centers.

This fundamental change in how workloads are provisioned also impacts the rest of the physical infrastructure surrounding the servers: the networks, storage, memory and security services. Not all applications are equal, nor do they require the same access to the same amount or type of resources. So how do you account for this in a highly mobile, flexible and non-deterministic virtualized environment? One choice is to statically over-provision physical resources to account for all possible peaks from any workload. Networks, for example, would involve dedicating lots of individual connections and bandwidth to servers so that they can handle any workload thrown at them. This is not feasible because of cost, complexity and, perhaps most importantly, because of the inability to predict what resources will be needed in the future. As VM density increases beyond 30-to-1 and traffic fluctuates over time, especially across resource intensive applications including database and messaging systems, it becomes increasingly difficult to account for all possible workload scenarios.

So let’s consider making the underlying physical infrastructure completely flexible, which can provide the means to allocate resources from a ‘pool’ where and when necessary, much like CPU is treated today. The industry is approaching this idea in several ways, and vendors are working on pieces of the overall solution; for example, providing the ability to combine distributed local disk drives into a common pool of storage, or extending addressable memory in a given server or across clusters of servers. Networking companies are developing standards that allow distributed virtual switches to act as if they are part of one large, flat, layer 2 network. Others are working on the problem of providing I/O (network and storage connections) as virtual functions from a common resource pool and making this I/O, including bandwidth, identity and policy, flexible and mobile along with the VMs that it serves.

Experts say this harkens back to the mainframe days, and in many ways this is true. However, the game has changed in a much more fundamental way since all of this is accomplishable on a $2,000 server. The next step is to allow these servers to connect to any network or storage resource on-demand, from any vendor, across an entire data center management platform that is enhanced by downloadable plug-ins and applications to provide the visibility, control and automation of the available pools of resources.
